Walesby - a Lincolnshire village history

THIS LOCAL HISTORY book tells the story of Walesby from its origins in the Stone Age to life in the 20thcentury. The reader will discover how the village is connected with noblemen, distinguished scholars, eminent theologians, military heroes and the Royal Family. Peter Starling also describes Walesby’s historic buildings and the lives of the people that once lived in the village, sometimes amidst tragic circumstances.

Walesby has a church history that dates back to Roman times. The book explores this rich and fascinating history and explains the background to the two beautiful churches that serve the community today; one is celebrating its centenary, the other is nearer its millennium!

The school was a cornerstone of the community and the book gives a remarkable insight into the life of both pupils and teachers. As well as the church and school, the village once had the benefit of a post office, shops and a host of trades including blacksmiths, wheelwrights, carpenters and bricklayers. These businesses have mostly disappeared but their stories live on through the pages of this book.

The book concludes with a look at Walesby in the 20th century describing both life during the war years and then the marvellous community spirit that developed after the war. Illustrated with over 100 photographs, this book will be of interest to anyone who knows Walesby, the little village on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Residents, relatives, friends and visitors, or anyone who simply wants to know more about Walesby will delight in browsing through its pages.
